Energy Conservation:
Since 2006, Tabacón has succeeded in reducing its electricity consumption by 35%. The resort uses low-consumption fluorescent lighting in public areas, photo voltaic cells in its gardens and paths, and timers for general lighting. Guest rooms control electricity by key cards and have low-power electric fans to reduce usage of air conditioning systems. Water is heated by the Arenal Volcano to eliminate the need for high energy-consuming water heating systems.

Water Conservation:
All water used at the resort is mineral water that comes from the nearby volcano and natural springs. Guest rooms have low-flow showers. The resort has its own wastewater treatment plant that processes all refuse water and returns it to the river. This plant is analyzed regularly by the Ministry of Health.

Recycling Practices:
Recycling practices have been in place since 1997. Most products purchased for the resort are biodegradable, recyclable, or reusable. Organic waste is supplied to local farmers for livestock feed.

Rainforest Protection:
The resort protects the rainforest within the property which secures the natural habitat of many species such as white-faced monkeys, three-toed sloths, and over 200 species of birds. Hunting and extracting animals or endangered plants is strictly prohibited on the property and is enforced by the local MINAE (Ministry of Tourism).

Through efforts designed to build a culture of development and reciprocity with nature and community, Tabacón has become a leader in the Northern Zone of Costa Rica. Harmony with the environment is a lifestyle at the resort; this is shared with guests of Tabacón.

The Ministry of Environment of Costa Rica has certified Tabacón as a carbon neutral resort for its practices to offset its carbon footprint. The Costa Rican Tourism Institute has issued certification to Tabacón under the Sustainable Tourism Program. Among the initiatives that support Tabacón's actions are protection of flora and fauna, reduction of electricity consumption, and multiple programs for purchases of organic products, waste management programs and the resort's communication programs.

Staff Commitment:
Tabacón's Green Brigade is a group of employees committed to protecting and preserving the environment both within the resort and in the community through waste removal around the property, reforestation programs, the creation of herb gardens, and community based campaigns to raise awareness and fight Dengue fever.

Community Involvement:
Tabacón is a model of corporate social responsibility. An important part of the resort’s legacy is its leadership position in the community. The resort’s outreach program is funded by voluntary guest donations of $3 per room per night, which are matched by the resort. Donations go to public education facilities in the area and to a local children’s orphanage. Computer equipment and basic school supplies such as uniforms, shoes, pencils, notebooks and textbooks are donated to schools.

Tabacón's preservation of the environment and the gift of a "better" environment is part of its commitment to the children in the community.
