Tabacón Green — Sustainable Tourism Practices

  • Tabacón is a member of the Board of Tourism’s Certificate of Sustainable Tourism program (CST).
  • 100% of the natural areas are managed with sustainable practices, using organic compost produced in-house.
  • Water conservation campaigns are promoted to guests and employees. Freshwater mineral springs are protected against pollution.
  • Organic waste is supplied to local farmers to be used in livestock feed.

Corporate Social Responsibility

  • One fourth of Costa Rica's territory is currently set aside as protected areas — the Arenal Volcano National Park is part of them — where the most varied and exotic species live together.
  • The Community Development Program is funded by a voluntary guest donation of $3 per room per night, and is matched by Tabacón.
  • To date, the Community Development Program has raised over $205, 000 in equipment and supplies.
  • Contributions fund the donation of supplies and equipment to local public schools, and help provide food and clothing for the local orphanage, El Hogarcito San Juan Bosco.

Environmental Awareness and Improvement

  • Tabacón has been certified a carbon-neutral resort by the Ministry of Environment and Energy of Costa Rica, meaning it has achieved net zero carbon emissions by balancing a measured amount of carbon released with an equivalent amount sequestered or offset.
  • Tabacón's carbon emission reduction program has led to a 2.5 to 1 carbon fixation to carbon emission ratio.
  • Tabacón has received a Certification for Sustainable Tourism (CST), a certification system of environmental and social responsibility that works to evaluate the development and operation of tourism enterprises. It is promoted by the Costa Rican Board of Tourism (ICT) and recognized by the World Tourism Organization (WTO).

Guest and Employee Participation

  • Guests are encouraged to participate in Tabacón's "Green" efforts through donations and active protection of the environment.
  • Guests are invited to plant their own tree in the rainforest, which they can watch grow and accordingly add to the rainforest’s continuation .

Staff Involvement and Tabacón's Green Brigade

  • The Green Brigade is an example of a group of employees developing several programs not only at the company level but also for the community.
  • The Green Brigade’s activities include:
    • Waste removal around the property and on the main road between La Fortuna and Arenal National Park area.
    • Reforestation programs at the property aimed at the conservation of local bird and wildlife species. Special attention is place to the Almendro Tree, home to the Green Parakeet.
    • Creation of herb gardens and growth of some natural plants to produce our own organic fertilizers.
    • Community Campaigns to raise awareness and fight against Dengue fever.
