FINNISH TOURIST BOARD
Finland appeals to travelers with many interests. Finland's
King's Road, a 13th-century route stretching from Oslo, Norway,
to St. Petersburg, Russia, links historic attractions, architecture,
design, cultural events and recreational activities from golf
to dining. Popular stops include Suomenlinna Fortress Island
in Helsinki and Old Rauma, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites;
and the Medieval castle in 777-year-old Turku. Helsinki, “Europe's
Design Capital,” has a new Design District, a shopper's
mecca for things cool, contemporary and uniquely Finnish.
The area reflects Finland's high-profile image in international
design with such well-known names as Artek, iittala, Marimekko
and Kalevala jewelry and also encompasses art galleries, studios,
interior-decorating shops, clothing boutiques, restaurants
and museums. Among recent hotel developments in Helsinki,
the country's first lifestyle hotel, the Klaus K, was included
on the Condé Nast Traveler “Hot List” and
has two celebrity chefs, Marcus Samuelsson of NYC's Aquavit
and Finnish "green chef" Markus Maulavirta. Also,
Scandinavia’s only five-star hotel, Kämp, was ranked
among the “100 best hotels in the world” by Travel
+ Leisure. Helsinki is a rising star on the European culinary
scene with more than 800 restaurants.
